Angel Gallegos First Days Fishing in Florida
It took two helicopters and several aeroplanes and twenty eight hours of travel from Afghanistan to get Eric Gallegos back to see his family and friends in Lake Placid. His brother Jesse asked me would I take Eric and his family out on Lake June for a mornings fishing. We had agreed to meet at 9.am and I decided to arrive at 8 am to check out some of my hot spots. After trolling the Lake for a half an hour and getting no bites I headed over to pick up the Gallegos family. We fished the four sides of the lake hoping to find some fish. I explained to Eric that due to the cold fronts in recent days the fish were in the deepest water of the lake. Due to the wind we continued to work the edges. After a hour we came across some schooling bass. I changed the lures on two rods for the lads and they proceeded to start fishing. It was not long before I hooked a bass and handed the rod over to Angel who made his parents proud when we proceed to land his first fish. We had a good hour or so of father and son catching bass. I forget who caught the most fish but it was young Angel who stole the day when he landed a big three pound bass. I sat Angel at the helm for the return journey to the boat ramp, he was a great skipper when he managed to bring us back the length of the lake. I believe young Angel only celebrated his seventh birthday recently and as I write up this blog I am reminded of my first days fishing all them years ago on the pier in Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco when I was eight with my parents and a old Russian man called Ken. I hope in years to come young Angel will remember his first days fishing with his parents and an Avidangler from Ireland.
